Join the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on June 28, 2023, and July 19, 2023, for two webinars on the final rule exempting from pesticide registration requirements a class of plant-incorporated protectants (PIPs) created using genetic engineering.

In May 2023, EPA released a final rule exempting those PIPs from registration requirements under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), and from the food or feed residue tolerance requirements under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA). This rule ensures that public health and the environment are protected while reducing costs for the regulated community, consistent with Executive Order 14081 on advancing biotechnology. The rule may also result in increased research and development activities, commercialization of new pest control options for farmers (particularly in minor crops such as grapes and cucumbers), and reduced use of conventional pesticides.

The final rule and additional information, including EPA’s response to comments are available in docket EPA-HQ-OPP-2019-0508 at www.regulations.gov.

These webinars support EPA’s ongoing engagement with stakeholders to implement innovations to agricultural practices.

On Wednesday, June 28 from 2-3:30pm EDT, EPA will host a "Final Rule Exemptions of Certain Plant-Incorporated Protectants Derived from Newer Technologies” webinar. The webinar will also provide an overview of the exemptions EPA has finalized under FIFRA and FFDCA and the associated notification process outlined in the final rule. Participants will be able to ask questions. Register here.

On Wednesday, July 19 from 2-3:30pm EDT, EPA will host a “Electronic Submission Portal for Exemptions of Certain Plant-Incorporated Protectants Derived from Newer Technologies” webinar. This webinar will describe the electronic submission portal that will be used in the notification process, providing a step-by-step demonstration for using the submission portal and answering questions from participants. Register here.

Featured speakers for both webinars include Mike Mendelsohn, Amanda Pierce, and Wiebke Striegel from EPA’s Biopesticides and Pollution Prevention Division.
