The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on April 12. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. - House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations Chair Morgan Griffith (R-VA) today announced a subcommittee hearing to discuss the role of data brokers and online privacy protections.

“Every seemingly innocent click online could leave Americans vulnerable to having their private data sold to a hoard of marketers, researchers, and, potentially, bad actors. Rarely do individuals consider who or what is harvesting their data, selling it without disclosure, and failing to keep it secure. This hearing will give our members a chance to shine a light on the role of data brokers and educate Americans on unchecked collection of their sensitive personal information. It will also highlight the further need for a strong national data privacy standard, like the bipartisan American Data Privacy and Protection Act."

The Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations hearing is titled “Who is Selling Your Data: A Critical Examination of the Role of Data Brokers in the Digital Economy."
