Join the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on March 28 and April 4, 2023, for Spanish-language webinars on how to protect yourselves, your loved ones and your communities from lead exposure. These webinars are based on the Lead Awareness Curriculum, an adaptable resource to protect communities from potential lead exposure through community engagement.

In 2021, EPA launched its local training and outreach initiative to reduce childhood lead exposure in environmentally overburdened and underserved communities throughout the United States and its territories. Through the nationwide effort, the Agency has hosted in-person and virtual sessions using the Lead Awareness Curriculum to almost 900 individuals across the U.S., including Spanish-only in-person sessions in Arecibo and Loíza, Puerto Rico and Miami.

These upcoming Spanish webinars supplement recent efforts to expand access to important information about lead and lead exposure to all communities, including Spanish-speaking communities. In November 2022, EPA released a Spanish edition of the Lead Awareness Curriculum, providing a new resource for Spanish speakers to improve their understanding of lead’s potential impacts on children’s health and take action to prevent childhood lead exposure. The effort also reflects the Agency’s Lead Strategy, which commits to using outreach as one way to reduce lead exposure. In these webinars, EPA will use the curriculum to provide an overview of lead and demonstrate ways to spread knowledge and awareness.

On Tuesday, March 28 from 1-2:30 p.m. EDT, EPA will host an “Understanding Lead” webinar for the public to learn about lead, its impacts and ways to reduce and prevent lead exposure. Participants will learn about potential sources of lead exposure, its impacts and effect, simple actions to reduce lead exposure and the importance of testing children’s blood levels. Parents, grandparents, community leaders, tribal leaders, childcare workers, healthcare providers, youth (ages 12 and up) and anyone else interested in learning more about lead are invited to attend. Register here.

On Tuesday, April 4 from 1-3:30 p.m. EDT, EPA will host a “Train-the-Trainer” webinar for community leaders to learn how to educate their communities about preventing lead exposure using the Lead Awareness Curriculum. Participants will learn how to modify the curriculum to educate their communities about lead, lead exposure and actions to reduce and prevent childhood lead exposure. Community leaders—including educators, outreach specialists, community health workers, environmental staff, faith-based leaders, tribal representatives, social workers, youth leaders and anyone else with experience educating and training members of their community—are invited to attend. Register here.
